“They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.”
Who is “they”?!
Where are these “places” that need restoring?!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!
Over the next 9 months, I will be preparing myself for a 10 month journey where I will be attempting to answer all these questions and more via a leadership course called Soul61.
Who am I?
My name is Peter David Briggs, I’m 18 years old from Milton Keynes and currently a student who has just finished my final year of A Levels. I studied Design Technology: Product Design, English Lit+Lang and Psychology. After a gap year serving at Soul61, I hope to go on to university to study BA Product Design and become an Industrial Designer.
I’ve been attending St Mary’s Church in Bletchley since I was six. As I have grown in my faith, I have developed a deep desire to serve and learn more about God. I went to Soul Survivor (a Christian festival) with the church for the fourth time in Summer 2018, where our curate (Matt Beer) felt God saying that I had a calling into leadership. Upon hearing this, it resonated with me, but I immediately thought to myself how unprepared and inadequate I was to be that kind of person.
That’s where Soul61 comes in.
What is Soul61?
This is how Soul61 describe the course:
“It’s a leadership course designed to build up Christ-like leaders. This is leadership that emphasizes the importance of serving, kindness, humility and character. It’s leadership that focuses on relationship with God and is the overflow of a love for Him. It’s leadership that is willing to lay aside reputation, comfort and self, in order to build something that is lasting, eternal and matters in the Kingdom of God.”
I’ve always wanted to dedicate a portion of my life to serving God and stepping out in my faith. Soul61 will enable me to do just that. Over the 10 months of the course, I will be taught ‘useful theology’ by some amazing teachers, participate in a voluntary placement with teams such as youth, outreach, social action, media, evangelism, kids, or community work, and help with the general running of the Soul Survivor church and their events.
It’s a bit of a sticky one, still…
The basic cost for the 2019-2020 course is £6500 which will cover my accommodation, bills, and course materials. With faith, I will be paying this sum in the middle of September 2019.
Alongside this, I will need money for living expenses throughout the course. It costs around £70 per week to live in Watford (where the course is run), which works out at around £2800 for the whole course. I don’t need to have this in advance, but because the course is full time, it won’t be possible to get a job. Between now and September I will be doing various fundraising events to support this and will be running this blog to share my activities and ideas with my supporters.
I realise that these figures are quite large! Soul61 don’t make any profit and do everything they can to keep the cost to an absolute minimum. If you feel able and willing to contribute financially, please get in touch on the ‘Contact’ page on this site and let me know. Whether it’s a one-time transaction or a monthly contribution, I will be very grateful no matter the amount.
I’m very excited and I can’t wait to see what God does!
